VA2013: day three

Ducks!

(Whoops, didn't post this yesterday. Maybe I'll post the last two days today?)

View of Downtown Richmond.

Virginia Capital!

Wednesday morning, we headed downtown and over to the capital. There are tours every 30 minutes (or each hour?), and when we got there... well, we missed the last tour, but it was a school group. We hung around them every so often, to hear what the tour guide had to say, but otherwise we walked around ourselves.

Here are a couple of pictures from inside the building!

George Washington

The Queen! From her visit in 2007.

Next, we walked over to the Governor's mansion. Thankfully, we got there maybe three minutes before the tour started. We were able to escape the rain by hiding underneath a tree, but I don't know how long that would have lasted! Tours are only on the lower level of the mansion, because, while the Governor and his family occupy the entire building, their truly personal areas are upstairs.

Here are some pictures from the mansion!

George Washington

We learned on our trolley tour (which happened on day four) that no statue in Richmond can be any taller than this particular statue.

Governor's Mansion from a distance.

Up close.

Afterwards, we headed over to the Fine Arts museum. If you're ever in the area and want to do something that's free and unique, head over there! We got there maybe an hour and a half before they closed, so we couldn't stay too long. We got to look at a little over half of the exhibits. Pop Art has never really interested me, but some of the other exhibits, like from the Renaissance and from Africa, really stood out. I liked looking at all of those pieces.

There was supposed to be a food truck gathering behind the museum at 6pm, but it ended up being cancelled sometime during that day. (Whether it was due to rain or due to a lecture that was being held inside the building, we weren't sure.) So, because we were starving, we headed back over to Carytown to grab a bite to eat. I'm upset I forgot the name of the restaurant - I was such a terrible traveler this time around - but they had some good food. The menu had a variety of foods, with mostly pasta but also sandwiches, meats, and even gyros. I chose to get a club sandwich - sans tomatos - because I figure, you really can't go wrong with a club sandwich! Rachel ended up getting a gyro.

Sammich.

The portion was HUGE! I was surprised I ate all of it... fat kid + very hungry person = grubgrubgrub.
