VA2013: day one

I know that picture isn't much, but I can't give away too much with an introduction picture!

That's right, drag brunch.

Because I got in so late, and Rachel and I were so excited to see each other, we ended up not going to bed until 3am. We were planning on waking up around 10:30am, but 10:30 turned into 12:30. We didn't have to be downtown until 1:45, but we still couldn't laze around while getting ready. Thankfully, we made it just in time for everything to begin.

Now, I've never been to a drag brunch before. I'm so glad I went, though. It was so much fun! The way I'd describe this one would be a low-scale "Birdcage". (If you haven't seen that movie, you should.) These ladies are very talented, and every one of the $1 bills I handed to them were well-deserved. (I forgot to bring more $1 bills, and next time, I'll remember to bring more than $11!)

Yummy brunch

The menu wasn't grand, but there was something available for everyone's tastes. Our server - I think his name was Michael, I forget, but he was amazing - told us about the day's specials, which included a quesadilla filled with chicken, goat cheese, and spinach. I decided to try that, and I was surprised when, also on the plate, were potato squares (seemingly grilled more than fried, which I've never had prepared like so before) and a fruit variety. I know you don't go for the food, but what I had was pretty darn good!

I didn't take any pictures of my alcoholic beverages - yes, plural, because I had two. The first was a mimosa, the second was a some sort of drink with lots of citrus flavors and lots of vodka. (Next time, I'll actually write down these drinks, or take pictures of them!)

Now, I'll provide a couple of pictures of the ladies:

I wish I took better pictures!

Boba time!

After lunch, Rachel and I decided to get some boba tea. It's rare for me to get boba tea, between work and the fact that I don't feel like driving all the way across town to get boba tea. Rachel got lemon boba, and I got mint chocolate mocha boba. It was delicious!

Old-school Arby's

After boba, we drove around for a while. We browsed through a couple of stores - Michaels and Party City - before heading to dinner.

Second chance for Thai

A few weeks ago, I took my sister out so I could fill my shabu-shabu cravings. In 2008, my friend and her family took me to a shabu shabu restaurant in Tokyo. Recently, I've been craving to try that again. While the food was good, it made me terribly sick that night. (Let's just say it's not fun being at a New Kids on the Block concert and having the most severe stomach cramps.)

Rachel and I met her friend at a Thai restaurant, and I was worried about it a bit due to my previous experience with Thai food. Thankfully, the food was delicious and it didn't make me sick. I got this spicy beef dish, with onions, peppers, and other greens mixed in. I was very pleased with the food, and I'm very excited to eat more Thai in the future.

And there you have it for day one! It was a bit mellow today, but still fun nonetheless. Day Two will be posted tomorrow!
